The great ones always go out in a blaze of lawsuits. The real victim of Kodak's collapse is this sadly overlooked 16MP Camera. It's as if there was one last great Beatles album that nobody ever heard because it was tied up in litigation.Just last week, a judge delivered another kick to Kodak's crotch, throwing out their suit against Apple and ruling one of Kodak's most important patents invalid.

The timing of the Kodakalypse is bitterly ironic: right when the company had finally caught up to the digital age, just as they mastered the digital camera with this feature-slathered, high-quality Easyshare, they got out of the camera business altogether. Its 26x zoom - yes, that's twenty-six - alone would put it in a heretofore unscaled echelon in the point-&-shoot galaxy. Throw in features like Smart Capture Technology, Face Recognition, and Blur Reduction, and it's clear Kodak got its groove back - in the factory if not on the balance sheet.

Kodak wouldn't want you to remember them as merely a defendant, or the subject of depressing news stories. They'd want you to remember them as the company that basically invented mass-market photography. The Easyshare 16MP Camera came along too late to save Kodak, but it makes one hell of a tombstone.
